Heat Index Guidelines

Heat Index Guidelines

The following Heat Index Guidelines must be followed:

1. If the outside heat index is less than 96 degrees, optional water breaks should be taken every 30 minutes for 10 minutes in duration.

2. If the outside heat index is 96 to 102.9 degrees, a 10 minute mandatory water break must be given to all players every 30 minutes.  Water must always be available and players allowed to drink as much water as they desire at any time during practice.

3. If the outside heat index is 103 to 106.9 degrees, a 10 minute mandatory water break must be given to all players every 15 minutes.  Water must always be available and players allowed to drink as much water as they desire at any time during practice.

4. If the outside heat index is 107 degrees or more, no outside practices are allowed and only practices and/or team meetings inside air conditioned buildings are permitted.

Note:  During the course of the day, the heat index will rise and fall depending upon the time of day, amount of wind, cloud cover, etc.  These heat guidelines will be in effect for both spring and fall football seasons. The above are merely guidelines and it is the responsibility of parents to make the ultimate decision as to the participation of their child in events when heat may be a factor, taking into consideration the age and physical condition of their child. Parents also have the ultimate responsibility to inform their child about the dangers of heat and need for protection, including sunscreen and proper hydration.

If a parent believes it is too hot or cold for their child to practice or play, they have every right to exclude their child from participating. A parent’s discretion supersedes any coaches, program or league decision to practice or play games.  A player will not be penalized in any way for their absence.
